Interview With Lauren Merriman
Assistant Manager At Planet Fitness
Lauren Merriman is an alumni of Tiffin University, and she graduated in the spring of 2013 with a degree in business: sports and recreation management. She also played soccer for Tiffin, as she starred as a varsity player for the dragons for three of her four seasons, seeing minimal playing time as a freshman. Lauren Merriman accumulated a(n) 3.4 cumulative grade point average as a student, and excelled in the classroom quite frequently.
Lauren interned at Wall 2 Wall soccer complex, which is an indoor soccer facility located in Mason, Ohio. The Wall 2 Wall soccer complex focuses upon the management of adult and youth soccer leagues, and also rents spaces to several other organizations to run practices, leagues, and events.
Ensuing, I asked her a questions pertaining to her thoughts and opinions surrounding the sports industry. She responded by stating that the sports industry is one in which rapidly alters, and does so based upon specific criteria. Certain things involving the sports industry can alter on a daily basis due to such things as acquisitions, transfers, and additional exterior forces. Customers will always take you by surprise with their requests, complaints, and comments. Things occur in the sports industry which are often unforeseeable; the validity of that statement stems from the management of a facility. You must be prepared for anything with the customers from physical altercations to injuries, but also need to be prepared for maintenance issues involving the building.
Secondly, I asked Lauren if there were any tips that she'd be able to provide to any aspiring students looking to manage a facility or obtaining positions within the sports industry. She simply replied by stating that the primary difference in working in business and working with sports businesses are the uncontrollable forces which mold it per se. A great deal of what occurs in the sports industry is unexpected and you have to learn as you go. As a student, it's imperative that you're able to think hastily, and adapt accordingly.
Informational Interview with Joseph Lofton
Joseph Lofton and I have been affiliates since the second semester of our freshman year in 2010. I specifically chose to interview Joseph because of his fellowship with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. He serves as a youth camp instructor, and the youth football camp powered by the Pittsburgh Steelers assists in occupying the time of adolescents and providing them with something recreational to partake in on a daily basis. He's expected, and is primarily responsible for the total welfare of and program leadership of a specific group of adolescents. Generally, Joseph stated that his likes pertain to interacting with the children, and being granted the opportunity to enhance the lives of the youth. He mentioned that his dislikes pertain to time constraints and not being allotted adequate time to actually work with the children and physically alter their mentalities and viewpoints upon life. According to Mr. Lofton, he's required to wear Pittsburgh Steeler training gear which includes a jacket, matching sweatpants, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes resembling their colors. He's working every other week on the weekends from ten a.m. to noon with the youth of the Pittsburgh Steelers youth football camp. The pay is based upon a monthly stipend which is also intertwined with his duties pertaining to player personnel. He's provided with the opportunity of standing upon the sideline at each home game, access to the locker room, and minor interaction with the players of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Joseph graduated from Tiffin University in the spring of 2014 with a degree in business, sports and recreation management; required educational criteria for his position consists of a high school diploma or GED. Related experience stems from working as a camp counselor in high school. The salary range was undetermined, seeing as how this entry level position varies. The turnover rate is extremely low due to the fact that it's offered partially on a voluntary basis. Joseph's opportunities for advancement include potentially earning a permanent position within the player personnel department and working as an operations manager for the Steelers.
